Climate
Eritrea can be split into three distinct zones: the central highlands, coastal region and western lowlands. Each has its own unique climate pattern.
In the highlands, the hotter months are between April-May where temperatures can reach 30°c, and the colder months are between December-February where during the night, temperatures can reach freezing. There are two rainy seasons, a shorter period between March and the start of April, and the main period between the end of June and September. Typically, aside from the hotter and colder months the highlands enjoy a moderate temperature, even during the rainy season with only a light jumper and/or raincoat necessary for chilly evenings or rainy season visits.
On the coast, the hotter months are between June-September with extremely high temperatures of 40°c - 50°c, during these times it is advised to remain indoors during midday hours. In typical winter months, temperatures range from 21°c - 35°c. These are much more enjoyable conditions, with milder temperatures, cool breezes and clear skies. In the north of the coastal region, near Dankalia the rainy season is between February – April.
In the western lowlands, the high temperatures are comparable to those in the coastal region but experienced in April – June. December is the coldest month with temperatures as low as 15°c. The rainy seasons are the same as in the central highlands.
The necessary clothing depends on the time of year and zone that you visit. In hotter times, thin breathable clothing is advised, with light waterproof clothing in case of showers. In colder periods and zones, warmer layers are advised so that some may be removed in case temperatures become warmer, as they often do. If you are travelling during the rainy season, warm layers and heavy waterproofs are advised.
